Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you’re living with missing or failing teeth, you’ve likely wondered whether dental implants are right for you. The good news is most healthy adults are strong candidates, and implants are widely considered the gold standard for tooth replacement because they function, look, and feel like natural teeth. That said, candidacy isn’t one-size-fits-all. A thorough evaluation of your oral health, bone density, and overall medical history is what determines whether implants are the right path forward for your smile.

Most adults with one or more missing teeth are candidates for dental implants. You are likely a good candidate if you have adequate jawbone density to support the implant post, healthy gum tissue, and no uncontrolled systemic conditions such as unmanaged diabetes that would impair healing.

You may still be a candidate even if you have experienced bone loss. Bone grafting is a routine procedure performed in-house at Charlotte Dental Arts that rebuilds lost bone density and creates the foundation needed for successful implant placement. A sinus lift may be recommended for bone loss in the upper jaw. These preparatory procedures extend the overall timeline but do not diminish implant outcomes.

The best way to determine candidacy is a CBCT scan and consultation with Dr. Porter. Take our implant candidacy quiz or call (704) 397-4332 to schedule your free consultation.

What Makes Someone a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

A dental implant replicates the full structure of a natural tooth using three components: a titanium post placed surgically into your jawbone, an abutment connector, and a custom crown, bridge, or prosthesis on top. The titanium post undergoes osseointegration, bonding directly with your bone over a healing period of three or more months and creating a permanent, stable anchor that functions exactly like a natural root.

This root-level foundation is what separates implants from every other replacement option. Dental bridges require filing down adjacent healthy teeth for support. Dentures rest on the gum surface and provide no stimulation to the jawbone, accelerating bone loss over time. Implants preserve and actively stimulate the jaw, maintaining both function and facial structure for the long term.

Dr. Porter uses CBCT cone beam imaging and fully guided surgical techniques for every implant case, mapping your implant position in precise 3D before surgery begins and executing it with a surgical guide accurate to the millimeter. CEREC same-day crown technology allows final restorations to be milled and seated in-house, often in a single visit.

Your Dental Implant Treatment Process

Every implant case at Charlotte Dental Arts follows a structured, transparent process. Here is what to expect from your first appointment through your final restoration.

Step 1: Consultation and Imaging

We review your dental and medical history, take digital x-rays, and perform a full CBCT cone beam scan to assess bone density, nerve locations, and optimal implant positioning. A custom treatment plan is created before you leave.

Step 2: Preparatory Procedures (if needed)

Some patients require a tooth extraction or bone graft before implant placement. We perform these procedures in-house and allow appropriate healing time before moving to surgery.

Step 3: Implant Placement Surgery

Using a computer-generated surgical guide, Dr. Porter places your titanium implant post with guided precision. You will be comfortable under sedation. Most patients report the procedure is far less involved than expected. In many cases a temporary crown is placed the same day so you leave with a functional tooth.

Step 4: Healing & Osseointegration

Over the next three to six months your implant fuses with the surrounding bone. Temporary teeth are in place during this period so you can eat and function comfortably while healing progresses.

Step 5: Final Restoration

Once osseointegration is confirmed, your permanent crown, bridge, or prosthesis is fabricated, often same-day using our in-house CEREC system, and seated. Your implant is now complete and indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

Dental Implant Before & Afters

Carl had been struggling with severe periodontal disease for years, resulting in the loss of all his premolars and molars due to the chronic degradation of supporting bone caused by this condition.
His remaining teeth were deemed unsalvageable, so an All-on-X hybrid denture was used to restore his smile.
