Are There Any Alternatives To Dentures?

For most of dental history, patients who lost a full arch of teeth had one practical option: removable dentures. That’s changed. At Charlotte Dental Arts, we offer full-mouth dental implants as a permanent, fixed alternative that doesn’t require removal and doesn’t rely on adhesive to stay in place.

The Core Difference Between Dentures and Implants

The most clinically significant difference between dentures and dental implants is what happens to the bone underneath. When teeth are lost, the jawbone in that area begins to resorb because there’s no longer a root stimulating it. Dentures sit on top of the gums and don’t stop that process. Over time, that bone loss changes the shape of the jaw and makes dentures fit worse and worse.

Dental implants act as artificial roots placed directly into the bone. They provide the same kind of stimulation natural roots do, which slows bone loss and keeps the jaw structure more stable over time. That’s one of the main reasons implant-supported restorations tend to stay functional longer than removable options.

All-On-4 as a Denture Alternative

All-On-4 uses four implant posts placed strategically in areas of the jaw with the highest bone density to support a full arch of teeth. The result is fixed, not removable. Patients eat, speak, and care for the restoration much like they would natural teeth. There’s no plate covering the palate, no adhesive, and nothing to take out at night.

In many All-On-4 cases, a temporary restoration is placed the same day as the implant surgery. Patients leave with a functional smile immediately. The permanent arch is placed after the implants have fully integrated with the bone.

Who Can Be Evaluated for Implant-Supported Restorations?

Most patients who are currently wearing or considering dentures can be evaluated for implant-supported options. Even patients who have been edentulous for years and have experienced some bone loss may qualify. Dr. Porter reviews bone volume and density during the consultation to determine what’s realistic. Patients who were told they weren’t candidates elsewhere sometimes have options that weren’t fully explored.

When Dentures Still Make Sense

There are situations where removable dentures remain the right choice. Patients who are not surgical candidates due to certain medical conditions, or who need an interim solution while preparing for implant treatment, may start with dentures. We go through all the options honestly and let patients decide what fits their situation and timeline.
