Getting a dental crown used to mean multiple appointments, temporary restorations, and weeks of waiting, but CEREC technology has completely changed what that experience looks like. Today, patients can walk into a dental office in the morning and walk out the same day with a permanent, custom-made crown that fits naturally and looks beautiful. For anyone who’s been putting off a crown because of the time commitment or the hassle of traditional procedures, CEREC same-day crowns offer a genuinely different path forward.
At Charlotte Dental Arts, CEREC same-day crowns are a cornerstone of our practice and one of the areas where we truly stand out. Dr. Edwin Porter has completed over 6,000 CEREC restorations and serves as Visiting Faculty for CEREC Doctors, training dentists locally and nationally in digital crown technology. That level of hands-on expertise means patients here receive a precision-driven, efficient experience that goes well beyond what most dental offices offer.
What Makes CEREC Different From Traditional Crowns
The traditional crown process requires two appointments separated by two to three weeks. At the first visit, the tooth is prepared, a physical mold is taken, and a temporary crown is placed. That mold then gets shipped to an outside dental lab, where the permanent crown is fabricated. At the second visit, the temporary is removed, and the permanent crown is cemented in place. CEREC eliminates the lab entirely; everything happens in one visit.
This is made possible through CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology. Instead of messy impression trays filled with putty, an intraoral scanner captures precise digital images of your tooth and surrounding teeth in minutes. That scan feeds directly into design software, where your crown is modeled to match your bite, your tooth shape, and your surrounding smile.
A Step-by-Step Look at Your Appointment
Walking into your first CEREC appointment, you can expect the visit to last roughly two to three hours from start to finish. Here’s how that time is typically spent:
Before the crown is designed, your tooth needs to be properly prepared. Depending on your situation, whether you’re getting a crown after a root canal, due to a cracked tooth, or to address significant decay, we will gently numb the area and reshape the tooth so the crown fits over it comfortably and securely. This is the same preparation step used in traditional crown procedures; what comes after is where CEREC changes everything.
Digital Scanning and Crown Design
Once your tooth is prepared, we take a digital scan using a small intraoral wand that scans your tooth in seconds. There’s no gagging, no putty, and no wait time for the mold to set. The resulting 3D model of your tooth appears on-screen immediately. From there, the software assists in designing a crown that matches the dimensions and shape of your natural tooth, and we review and refine that design to ensure the fit is precise.
The digital workflow also makes it easy to preview exactly what your crown will look like before any milling begins. Research published in the National Institutes of Health database has confirmed that CAD/CAM all-ceramic crowns demonstrate excellent short- and long-term survival rates, with the precision of digital fabrication contributing to superior marginal fit and esthetic outcomes compared to conventional techniques.
Milling, Polishing, and Final Placement
Once the design is finalized, the specifications are sent wirelessly to our in-office milling unit, which sculpts your crown from a solid block of ceramic material. This process typically takes around 15 minutes. After milling, the crown is polished, color-matched to your surrounding teeth, and glazed to give it the same natural sheen as your enamel. We then try the crown in to check your bite and make any last adjustments before bonding it permanently in place.
The benefits of getting your crown completed in one visit go beyond convenience. You only receive local anesthesia once, you avoid the discomfort that sometimes comes with temporary crowns, and there’s no risk of a temporary crown shifting or falling off during the weeks between appointments. For patients who also benefit from restorative dentistry solutions for other concerns, having the crown completed quickly keeps overall treatment timelines on track.
How to Care for Your New Crown
CEREC crowns are crafted from high-quality ceramic that is durable, stain-resistant, and designed to last for many years with proper care. The good news is that caring for a CEREC crown is no different from caring for your natural teeth. Brushing twice a day, flossing every day, and keeping up with routine dental cleanings and exams will all help protect both your crown and the surrounding teeth and gums.
For the first 24 hours after placement, it’s a good idea to avoid very hard or very sticky foods while the cement fully sets. Some patients notice mild sensitivity to temperature for a few days after their appointment. This is normal and typically fades on its own. If anything feels off about your bite or if discomfort persists beyond a week, reaching out to our office is always the right move.
